Black Cohosh | Cimicifuga racemosa
Black cohosh is native to North America. In 19th century, it was used as a home remedy in America and also used in Native American medicine. It is used for rheumatism but has recently been used in a folk and traditional remedy to treat symptoms of menopause. The herb is also used to treat premenstrual syndrome and menstrual irregularities as well as to promote labour. Native American Indians were the first to use the plant for medicinal purposes. In Europe during the mid 1950’s, Black cohosh became a well-known treatment for dealing with women’s health problems.
Black cohosh is mostly used by herbal practitioners to eradicate spasms, ease menopausal symptoms, lower inflammation, prevent mood swings and enhance sleep. It’s considered as the natural cure all. Whilst it possesses sedative, analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties, it is also used to treat hot flashes, depression, insomnia, night sweats, anxiety, vaginal dryness and depression.
